DanceWell News - 2002
by Linda Springstead

December 10, 2002

Time passes quickly!  A whole two months and I haven’t written the news!  And now I’m sure some important things are skipping my mind in this busy season!

IN JANUARY 2003 THERE ARE PRICING CHANGES!    More information is on the home page, the costs page as well as the enrollment page.  Basically there is no price change if classes are prepaid before the class start date.  If paid on the day of class:  the series will be $35 instead of $32, or the regular drop-in of $10/class.

I remember we had a great Christmas party on December 7th since that was only 3 days ago!  There was again a great crowd of friends to celebrate together, great food so I hear, and Christmas dance music mixed in with our normal selections.  Another highlight of the evening was our Intermediate Bolero performers -- Superstars of the evening!  What a fantastic job!  There were those who had never performed before, and those who were pros (like me for instance -- I stood in for one student who could not make the performance).   These guys made my day!    Susan Adams , Kim Alford, Julia Chang, James Crockett, Elizabeth Davidson, Cam Duong, Stephen Halvorson, Russ Hamm, Leon Jallo, Eduardo Nilo, Rich Peterson, Sandy Sallee, Rick Simonsen , Arlina Toomey, An TonThat

In November and December we tested out the waters by changing the WEDNESDAY BEGINNERS CLASS to 7:30 , and decided to move it back up to the 6:30 time slot.  So check your calendars – in JANUARY the BEGINNER CLASS will again be at 6:30, there’ll be a Basic West Coast Swing class at 7:30 and the HAPPY HOUR PRACTICE PARTY at 8:30.

Classes for December have been great!  Then the last three weeks of December I’m on semi-vacation.   Although I’ll still be teaching privately as scheduled, there will be no more group classes until January 6th.  Then we’ll review long-forgotten patterns from December and add on new!

Our November dance was another great party time!     And another great performance!  Our Beginning Viennese Waltz class had a great adventure!  (And we know that adventure is “the land between entertainment and panic”).  Most all were new to the dance and to the pressures of performing!  These guys and gals are my heroes!  They did a very handsome performance for us, with partner changes and twirls!  Phil Bertrand, Nelson Bridwell, Chuck and Rosena Eng, Steve Halvorson, Samara Howell, Linda Kurth, Joyce Larson, Eduardo Nilo, Rich Peterson, Amy Shum, Yvonne Vonderraye. Congratulations to all!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EVERYONE TOO!  IF WE DON’T SEE YOU OUT PARTYING, WE’LL SEE YOU IN THE NEW YEAR 2003!

October 24, 2002

The Oregon Fall Festival competition this year was great fun!  If you’re new to dance, competitions are like showcases such as in Jazz and Ballet schools, where students can showcase their progress and judge themselves to a standard recognized across the States and even Worldwide.  We had several student entries this year on October 18, 19, & 20.   – Congratulations to Roy Aveling, Julia Chang, Joyce Larson, Susan Adams , Stephen Halvorson, and Marina Laurette!   Doing “competitions” is one great way to have a focus for dancing.  Student competitors gain sure knowledge of their own proper dancing skills, etiquette, and floor navigation, and of their improvements over time.  Quote from Roy “This time I handled the pressure the best ever!  Bring on the next!”

That seems most of my news for today!  Regarding studio events, the most important news is that the HAPPY HOUR PARTIES on Wednesdays are changing time to 8:30p rather than 9:00.  They'll be directly after the BEGINNER CLASS starting the first week in November.  This has gotten to be a popular event already.  Please remember to check the calendar for evenings with no dance party scheduled.  Though that doesn't happen very often, there will be no party the day before Thanksgiving, and no parties the week before Christmas, of Christmas or after Christmas.  We'll pick up on a regular basis again after the holidays!

I'd also like to mention how glad we are that Myron Robinson is well and almost ready to return to dancing.  I can't imagine what our small world would be like without him.  "Myron, you have been very missed by many!"  And though Maxine Fountain has not been at high risk, we know how frustrating it can be to want to dance and be in pain whenever we do.  Heal soon, Maxine, you're missed too!

October 14, 2002

Preparations are being made for Oregon Fall Festival!  We’ll have several entries this year with Roy Aveling, Julia Chang, Joyce Larson, Susan Adams , Stephen Halvorson, and Marina Laurette.  If you’d like to join us at our tables this year, contact me quickly at 503.241.0460 or Linda@dancewellballroom.com.  The dates are October 18, 19, 20, with most of the competitive events involving our students on Saturday the 19th.

Our Saturday October 5th dance party was great this month!   Lots of new faces and great energy!  We even played music later since so many stayed til the last minute!  More than 80 people joined in the fun this month and more than 50 were in the pre-dance Rumba lesson.   Several people joined us who we’d met at the Friday Night Fever Dance the night before, which was great fun too!  There I taught a fun Cha Cha routine to another large group of people -- and Stephen and I stayed til late there having a great time too!  The Fever Dance is held at the PPAA Building on 6th and SE Alder –

Stephen Halvorson and Marina Laurette danced a Waltz solo routine for us at our dance party on October 5th.  It was beautifully done by them and the crowd was in high gear to cheer them on!  They all looked great to me, the crowd and the couple and I appreciate each and every one!  Afterwards Stephen commented how different it is to dance alone versus in a group.  It was their first solo.  Their second came this past Saturday night at the USABDA dance, where they did just as well!   Susan Adams also did a great job in her Foxtrot routine!  Congrats to all.

On Tuesday, September 24th we were on the Good Day Oregon Show doing a special for the National Ballroom Dance Week.  We had great fun and were treated wonderfully by the crew there.  Joined by 17 DanceWell Students, they filled the screen with dancing, while I taught Drew Carey a box step on camera.    Did I say all this was at 6:00 in the morning?  Getting that many people to volunteer to dance that early… I’m not for sure, maybe it was just a dream…..   Anyway, thank you to Don Bellairs, Roy Aveling, Kim Alford, Doug Daniels , Julia Chang, Morgan Dempsey, Rick Simonsen , Joyce Larson, Amy Ayers, Marina Laurette, Myron Robinson, Cecelia Harper, Eduardo Nilo, Elizabeth Davidson.

On Saturday, September 28th Stephen and I were at the Scottish Rite Temple, where I taught a FREE Waltz lesson in honor of National Ballroom Dance Week.  Every year USABDA sponsors this event, where for a day, various instructors teach free beginning lessons for those interested.  It just so happened that I taught the first lesson 11:00, and while other instruction was happening Stephen and I stayed.  We ended up staying til 11:00 that night too -- visiting and dancing up a storm at the evening’s open dance that night as well.  Lots of fun and great opportunity for students as well.

September 19, 2002

September’s dance on Saturday the 4th was a great success!  Dancers were out to enjoy their last holiday week-end before Fall begins and that’s just what we did!  All 75 of us!  The dance started with a Tango lesson, surprising everyone with a slightly new slant to that dance! We continued with lots of dancing, and a Hustle demo by Ken and Jana, who were just great!  Our next dance will be on the 5th of October, with a Samba lesson.

Classes are great as well!  Our Viennese Waltz group will be doing a dance demo at our November dance, so watch for them!  And same night Bonnie McCabe and Larry Draper will perform their Quickstep Routine.  A few months back I taught a Paso Doble class at one of our parties and the interest was so great that we decided to have a Paso series class too!  Maybe we should do a Paso Doble showcase as well in the coming months!  And people are interested in showcasing Bolero as well, so watch for the next few months dances!

We’re continuing work on our new sound system, with new, better speakers placed around the floor.  More changes to come.

Preparations are being made for Oregon Fall Festival too!

And speaking of changes, our new Wednesday Night Mini-Party Practice Hour is taking off really well!  We had our 2nd dance last night and there were twice as many attending as the first!  Last week’s dancetime was also a birthday celebration for those with birthdays in September so we had cake too while last night’s goodies were early Halloween candies, cream puffs and brownies, brought by my daughter Melissa (What a combination!).  These Wednesday Nights are good times in many ways – to practice, to meet people, to remember dances, to re-connect with others, to review before the big “week-end dances”, so see which other dances we might want to learn…. Try it next week!

August 9, 2002

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT NOTE:  We have added a notebook computer at classes just this month.  Those who read this newsletter take notice, because it now takes a little longer to register at classes.  It’s going to be smart to prepay early for a while, or else get to classes early, or plan to wait in line til you can join the classes.

Let’s see…the first new item that comes to mind was the Portland Dance Festival on the 4th of July week-end!  We had lots of great instruction in the workshops and though we weren’t able to stay for the evenings, I’ve heard wonderful stories of fun.  Randy and Rhonda Shotts put on a great Country/Swing competition each year.

Next of note:  Our DanceWell July Dance on the 13th was great fun, and we had LOTS of people to share the fun with.  Some were in “costume”, meaning they were dressed like woods folk or in Roman togas or as Thespians, since the theme for this dance was Shakespeare’s Midsummer Nights Dream.   Others were not in “costume”; not at all meaning to say they were streakers, just meaning that they wore street clothes.

We had a Nightclub Two Step lesson to begin the evening – not correct, since we really began the evening with Carolyn Vivian, our make-up artist of the evening.  She did great make-overs for everyone who was interested so they’d truly look “other-worldly”.  There will be pics up soon on this site.  They’re already at the studio.  Then we had the lesson.  Then the evening took off with music and merrymaking.

The room was decorated in white drapes, ferns, trees and flowers, like we’d anticipate in olde Greece.  Several faeries were in appearance as well!  We even had a costume contest!  The winner was Morgan Dempsey. Dressed as Moon, Morgan fooled most people, myself included, and won everyone’s intrigued curiosity until later in the evening when he took off the mask.

I can’t wait to do it all again next year!  Here’s a description of our Midsummer Nights Eve Dance written by Heidi Hanzlik:

Linda Springstead's MidSummer Night's Dream Dance

Fun, Festive ingredients at Linda Springstead's MidSummer Night's Dream Dance included:  Morgan Dempsey in moon-mask, Murray Pyland in make-up, Robyn Edwards in Julius Caesar Toga, Maxine Fountain as Faerie Princess Tatiana

among a multitude of lovely maidens in flowing feminine fabrics adorned with crowns of flowers and ivy, faces beautifully enhanced a la Carolyn Vivien. The colorful evening included a Nightclub 2-Step Lesson, exhibitions from the

Master's Cha-Cha Class (Roy Aveling, Julia Chang, Stephen Halverson, Marina Laurette, Eduardo Nila, Donya Wiland) as well as a Rumba. (Ernest and Tenora Grisby, Richard Peterson, Miranda Willis, An and Cam Ton That, Terry Bergland, JoAnn Gilland, Leon Jallo, Sandy Sallee).  A bountiful buffet of delectable edibles as well as terrific, varied CD tunes added to the Reality of a great time for the decorated dancers as well as the "commoners" at Linda's MidSummer Dream Dance

I’d like to thank Remos Reynosa for inviting us and several of our couples for a joint studio effort.   We’re now movie stars (if we don’t end up on the cutting room floor).  The movie is called “The Dust Factory”, about what happens in that infinite moment of time between life and death for those in a coma.  We understand the film will be ready for the Sundance Festival in January.  We extras had a great dance scene to do, with the excitement of Viennese Waltz at a Grand Ball, and then the dynamic of Tango when the villain came into the scene.

We were treated great, so when I joke about not being people, or even dancers, but rather were renamed “background”, that’s just pique because we didn’t have stars on our doors.  We were on the set from 9:30am til 12:pm – a long time, but it went fast, and people took the time to explain the lingo and process of making a movie to us – I enjoyed it all.

Watch for us on the big screen!  Roy Aveling, Julia Chang, Marina Laurette, Stephen Halvorson, myself, Liz Davidson, Eduardo Nilo, Amy Shum, An Ton That, and Cam Duong from our studio.  Plus many friends from around PDX too.

Next on the writing agenda would be our August 3rd dance.  Though a mite smaller, it was great fun, and allowed Stephen and I to thank all the friends we’ve made, since it was our 2nd anniversary dance.  The Paso Doble lesson went over great!  We’ll plan to have this dance more often!   The next dance coming up will be on September 7th with a Tango lesson.   See you there!

Enjoy your August!

June 10 2002

Summer in Oregon -- one day of sun, two days of wet sun...  I've lived here all my life and it's always been that way.  We learn to enjoy and make use of every minute of every day!  Oregon dancers have sun and fun on sunny days and dancing fun evenings and on wet days.

Congratulations to a favorite group of mine.  Ernest and Tenora Grigsby, Leon Jallo and Sandy Sallee, Roy Aveling and Heidi Hanzlik have danced together several times in various routines.  This last one was very appropriate for our Oregon Weather, plus was wonderfully well-received by crowds.  Dancing to “September in the Rain” in raincoats and with umbrellas, the group did a great job at several venues and “It ain’t over yet!”

The DanceWell MASTERS Cha Cha Class has been learning a Cha Cha routine, and have been performing this month at several venues.  Beaverton Elks Club on May 31st, our DanceWell Dance Party on June 1st, for Rose City Dance Club on June 2nd and for Sesame Club and Friday Night Fever on June 7th.  Several will also be performing on July 13th at our Costume Party and Dance -- Midsummer Nights Dream Dance -- where woods nymphs, gnomes and fairies will join with Grecian Gods and Goddesses for a wild summertime party!  And on July 27th at the monthly USABDA dance held at the Scottish Rite Temple.

The MASTERS routine is danced to a Spanish number called Que Locura, which translated means “What a Craziness!”  It’s a story about a girl playing hard to get, and a frustrated guy...  All my students played their parts beautifully.  My praise to:  Roy Aveling, Julia Chang, Stephen Halvorson, Marina Laurette, Eduardo Nilo, Donya Wiland, Rick Simonsen , Jean Ward, Yvonne Vonderray, Rich Peterson, Marci Martin, Ernest and Tenora Grigsby.  I have to mention that for the first time ever at one of our dance parties, a routine received a standing ovation by the crowd!  Now that means something!

Everyone continues to work improving their dance skills through the spring and summer;  many new students these past several months are those who are getting married soon and would like to create wonderful memories of a dreamy first dance.  Wedding dances are becoming very popular these days.  Congratulations and happy life to Michelle and Matt, Traci and Brody, Amber and Pete.

Congratulations also to the 2002 Century High School Honors students.  Each year for the past four, Eric Zimmer and myself have choreographed a show for those special students with top grades and high community service records.  Each year we have taken students who have never danced and given them some skills they could be surprised and proud to have achieved.  One year was staged in a speak-easy, one year was in the old west – this year was on Broadway.  Twelve students worked unbelievably hard to be successful at their dance – AND DID THEY WOW THE AUDIENCE ON MAY 20TH .  Foxtrot, hip hop, Lindy Swing, Strip.  It was ALL there!

AND ABOUT MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM IN JULY!  Midsummer Nights Dream is a CELEBRATION OF LINDA'S TEACHING IN THE TIGARD STUDIO FOR TEN YEARS! The scene is set for Shakespeare’s Dream —with elves and fairies, and a forest scene.  Togas make a great easy costume so therefore it becomes a toga party -- (STREET CLOTHES ARE FINE TOO!).  Add a contest for the best mask -- THERE'S A COSTUME WORKSHOP TO DEVELOPE IDEAS FOR DECORATING MASKS AND CREATING COSTUMES AND SHOES ON JUNE 29TH.  (We'll have masks available for those who forget at the party).  And we’ve added a raffle drawing too for a trip to the beach at Shiloh Inn, Lincoln City!  WE'RE SET TO ENJOY OUR FIRST ANNUAL MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM!

Have a great summer!

April 18 2002

What a busy time!

Our thanks go to FJ Abaya for visiting us to do coaching this month.  FJ was a great help to lots of our students and gave us all some good tips for our Waltz and Cha Cha in his workshops.  We intend to have him come back soon!  Also, plans are to have Jenelle Marranto come to do coaching for us the end of June, so be watching for her workshops as well.

And we won’t want to miss the workshops and coaching by Anik Jolencoeur and Alain Doucet, who will be in Portland for USABDA’s Regional Dance Competition on May 18.  We’ve not scheduled class on Thursday May 16th just so we can all go to the workshops.  My understanding is that they’re Ballroom workshops on Thursday and Latin Workshops on Wednesday.   See you on Thursday this time!

Another point of interest:  This June I’ll have been teaching in the Tigard studio for 10 years!  Before that I was a nomad.  WE LOVE REASONS TO CELEBRATE, so we’ll be having some entertainment at our dance on June first.  AND this dance will be a potluck affair for those who like to bring special goodies!

April 1 2002

Well, another month gone!

The City of Roses Competition on March 2 & 3 was great fun and the Saturday night Latin show by James and Janna Kunitz was one of my all-time favorites!  That couple has such charisma, and such a hot look they are all-time crowd-pleasers!

Our group did especially well at the competition this year. Congratulations go to Roy Aveling, Julia Chang, Carol Goodenough, Stephen Halvorson, Joyce Larson, and Jay Willis. It was Carol and Stephen’s first competition and I chuckle about Saturday morning arriving at the Scottish Rite Temple where City of Roses is held each year. Entering his first competition, Stephen was positive he wasn’t ready and did not remember his routines. And since Stephen is a consummate speaker and also my husband, he actually says things to me that others only think. I truly heard about the responsibilities and pressures a leader feels. Of course he was great and it was commented he looked like he’d been entering comps for years. Roy Aveling and Julia Chang did great in the American Rhythm dancing. And Stephen, Carol, Joyce, Jay and Susan all did very well in the American Smooth categories they entered. We’re already getting set for the USABDA Regional Competition in May of this year.

Our Masters Cha Cha group will be performing in May and June of this year! The routine is a hottt one too! Our tentative schedule is: May 4—Studio Dance Party May 19—Rose City Dance Club May 31—Beaverton Elks Club June 7—Sesame Dance Club June 7—Friday Night Fever Dance The USABDA date is not set at this time.

We have lots of showcases coming up too! Dave and Kathy Thompson are working on a Foxtrot routine to be shown at the Mrs. Oregon Pageant in April; and Ernest and Tenora Grigsby, Roy Aveling and Heidi Hanzlik, and Leon Jallo with Sandy Sallee are just finishing a group Foxtrot routine to be shown in May along with the Cha Cha Masters Group Performance. We have a Quickstep routine being worked on by Larry Draper and Bonnie McCabe . And we’re
beginning choreography for the annual show for the Century High School Honors graduating class of 2002. Wow!

Classes keep growing! This month we’ve changed our format slightly and added a new Beginner Class at 7:30pm. The class changes dances each month.  This month is Waltz, April will be Cha Cha, May will be East Coast Swing. The 6:30pm class is now Introduction to Dance and is geared to first-time dancers and learning to “work the feet” so to speak in order to feel comfortable in the progressive classes. Each week is devoted to a different dance style: Ballroom the first week, Swing the second, Latin the third, Nightclub the fourth.

Watch for our Happenings next month!

Linda

28 February 2002

Stephen and I were invited this month to be part of the Valentines 2002 Wedding and Dance of Jay Willis and Miranda Moy.  As you would imagine, Yogi and Boo Boo put on a great spread for everyone, the music was great and crowd participation was at the max.  This was a very fine evening at a very well decorated Milwaukie Elks Club.  The pick-a-nik basket was actually a full buffet dinner prepared by the Elks, DJ music was by Chris Small, and a dance lesson was taught by me for those who wished to be involved (it seems most of the 200 attendees wanted to be involved).  There was delicious wedding cake, a champagne toast provided by Jay’s best man (Mike Cacka, a friend of many years), and a roast made by the Master of Ceremonies Stephen Halvorson. It was agreed upon by everyone there that the event was truly wonderful!  It was also agreed that someone needs to be married every Thursday so we can have elegant affairs like these every week.

Earlier in the evening it was beautiful to listen to Kirsten Sandberg playing violin before the wedding ceremony.   Stephen and I reminisced about our own wedding and celebration, remembering the high excitement and anticipation, euphoria; and the stresses of getting all our bases covered before the wedding.  And we remembered what that special moment was like during that walk down the aisle.  Over the years I’ve seen Jay dance in competitions and showcases, and each time no matter how nervous, his expression was one of assurance.  At his wedding ceremony Jay’s look was again assured, solemn and expectant.  And Miranda herself was a beautiful bride.  Of course with her model’s beauty, that was already assured!

February 14th is being claimed by Jay and Miranda as their personal dance night – and a romantic time for all their anniversaries too. Congratulations and long life to you both from your dance family.

We’ve been preparing for the City of Roses Competition which should be lots of fun this year!  Held on the first week-end of March for many years now, City of Roses is one of the few large dance events in Portland each year.  Representing our dance group will be Susan Adams , Roy Aveling, Julia Chang, Carol Goodenough, Stephen Halvorson, Joyce Larson, and Jay Willis.  We wish all of them the best, and the same to several other friends also entering this year.

In April, USA BDA will be hosting Jean-Claude Genereaux and France Mousseaux from Canada for workshops and coaching, preparing for their Spring Fling Event here in Portland in April. In June is held the Brigham Young University Dance Camp each year.  This event, though held at the college is one that is a great dance experience.  Also in early August will be Holiday to Dance – a vacation/workshop/dance event also held annually here in Portland for many years.  And in October will be Oregon Fall Festival, another competitive event.

Our Cha Cha Masters group routine is coming together very well and the group is coming closer to performance dates.  Our first performance will be the first week-end in May at the DanceWell monthly dance!

 Peace, joy and good times!

  12 February 2002

Here it is February already and things are still very busy!

Classes are large and the Foxtrot and Waltz advanced classes just seem to continue and continue due to the great interest in those special dances.  The Mambo class has been great fun these past few months, so have the Nightclub Two Step classes.

Our last dance party on February 2nd was a great hit and I hear tell that the music was great!  We had a top crowd again.  It seems our dance family has grown.  It’s great that we have a new microphone system with so many in the room.  And with our new tables and chairs, the overflow can move to another area to enjoy the snacks and a quieter spot.

On February 2nd, Friday, I was invited to teach at the Friday Night Fever Dance.  When I asked Bob Smith which of the dances they’d like for me to teach, Bob suggested the Mambo.  So that’s what we did.  A roomful of people were successfully dancing Mambo by the end of the hour.  And word out was that it was great fun!  I agree, since it’s one of my favorite dances.  But then I have so many favorites!  That’s why I teach so many dances, since I enjoy them all so much.

On April 2nd I’ll also be teaching a mambo class again – this time for the Sesame Club, who is now having DJ music on the first Friday of the month.  That’ll be great fun too!

Our Valentines surprise was that we were invited to host Miranda Moy and Jay Willis’s wedding reception on Valentines Day at the Milwaukie Elks Club.  Jay has been one of the DanceWell family for many years, while Miranda is new just last year, and has made great strides as a dancer.  I helped them a little with their Wedding routine of Foxtrot since that’s their fave – one sung by their fave Johnny Mathis.  I’ll be teaching a small lesson for guests there who’ve not danced at all yet and Steve gets to do what he loves – the old roast and host routine.  He loves that.

I also get to help work a routine for Mrs Oregon America , Kathy Thompson, and her husband Dave Thompson. Kathy has held that title for the past year, and dancing will be her farewell performance as she awards the crown to the next winner.  Dave and Kathy have also been part of our family for many years and we’re very happy to enjoy their company and friendship.

Yet another of our students, Linda Kurth, is author of her new book about Keiko the whale.  Considered the most comprehensive history of Keiko, the story is great and pictures are beautiful.  Great work Linda.

On February 23rd we’ll do a party lesson for the Wilsonville Community Center , the second time we’ve done that.  Hopefully we’ll have some of our student competitors who are practicing for the City of Roses Competition the first week-end of March to showcase some of their material for the crowd that night.  (One of whom will be Steve – It’ll be his first time entering the competitive arena.)

Our next “THE WORKS” dance party on March 9th will feature Jim Grey and Sunny Paige, who will do one of their competition routines for us, and then in May we’ll have our Masters Cha Cha Group kick off their routine performance schedule.  That’ll be great fun too!

Here’s to peace, Joy and a great 2002,

Linda

January 9, 2002

Am I being good this year or what?  Only a couple of days since my last entry, but I wanted to mention about our first 2002 dance on January 5th.  There were almost 60 people again.  The new microphone system is a dream to use and everyone could easily hear for the lesson which was Merengue.
